As Irvin suggests, trying to do an entire analysis in your head is a bad
idea. (“What Is Academic Writing?”) Writing out formal annotations are
how we begin the work of getting our analysis on the page. A formal
annotation should 1) summarize the key ideas, craft choices, and events
of a piece, and then 2) offer a thoughtful and detailed analysis of a
particular element of structure (such as organization) or content (what
the essay is “about”, themes, argument, etc) that you identify and
explain using paraphrasing and quotes to show your reader what you mean.
Formal annotations are 1-1.5 pages in length, single spaced. Formal
annotations have two key elements of importance: content and form.

Content of Formal Annotations

Formal Annotations must contain the following distinct and important
elements of content:

1. Summary -a brief statement or account of the main points of the piece
you are writing about, and. 2. Analysis – a detailed examination of the
elements or structure of something, typically for the basis for
discussion or interpretation; an analysis does not always need to
address every element, it can focus on one or more elements that you
feel is of particular importance but in all circumstances the discussion
of a particular element should serve a clear purpose: supporting
interpretation

Formal annotations must also include these elements of form:

1. Single-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, with one (1) inch margins
on all sides,
2. Be at least one (1) page in length
3. Be free of egregious errors of spelling, grammar, or punctuation,
4. Include appropriate in-text citation (signal phrase + citation +
parenthetical, where appropriate), and
