FEMA Logistics: Post Hurricane Katrina
FEMA Logistics Management Directorate and Post Hurricane Katrina
Emergency Agencies
Catastrophic occurrences pose serious logistical anomalies especially when responding to emergencies and evacuations. Providing basic supplies such as medical, food, water and shelter in the event of a disaster can be challenging due to the serious devastation to infrastructural facilities (Holguín-Veras, Pérez, Ukkusuri, Wachtendorf & Brown, 2007). Recovery efforts are also hindered owing to inadequate knowledge regarding the problem of emergency supply. Therefore, the delivery of basic supplies is significantly hampered by insufficient understanding of the supply chain; and approaches for coordinating the flow of basic goods (Holguín-Veras et al., 2007). The ineffective logistical abilities of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after Hurricane Katrina and Super Storm Sandy caused serious effects on the socio-economic welfare of US. However, the organization has made serious changes since the two major events. The paper sets out to highlight how FEMA’s integrated logistics systems have changed post Hurricane Katrina and Super Storm Sandy.
